Technically excellent, innovative design
Our specialists at Coffey Geotechnics Ltd are at the forefront of delivering cost effective engineering solutions and design for geotechnical, engineering geology, hydrogeology, geo-environmental and mining projects.
Leading with Science®
We work alongside clients to develop their strategies and take their plans forward. We have an excellent breadth and depth of expertise across our region but also the support of a global network who can help us foster even more industry-leading and innovative solutions.
Technical Expertise
We have capabilities in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geoenvironmental Engineering and Mining Engineering. We also provide expert witness services in these disciplines. We operate up to date engineering software to enable efficient design and are invested in the BIM processes. Guided by our team of experienced senior engineers, our solutions are innovative and effective designs. The emphasis is on buildable and efficient design presented on clear construction drawings.
Sectors
We work on ground engineering projects across most sectors. Many of our projects are in property and transport infrastructure, and also water including new dam design, energy including onshore renewable and HDVC/transmission facilities, and geoenvironmental assessments and containment design. From tall buildings through highway underpasses to mining schemes, whatever your project, we will have previously seen the ground engineering problems you are encountering and provided appropriate solutions.
Projects
We are proud to have been at the forefront of iconic projects over the years. Our engineers have influenced infrastructure across the UK, Europe & Middle East, and globally. We have been at the leading edge of ground engineering research, helped guide British, European and International Standards, and worked with National Highways, Network Rail, CIRIA and others to produce guidance documents for the industry. Each project presents a fresh challenge, and each success reflects the dedication and flexibility of our engineers.
Project highlights
These projects demonstrate the wide variety of ground engineering challenges our teams face. While it is not possible to provide information here on all of the work we have undertaken, we are always happy to provide specific examples on request. Please visit our projects page to see some more detail about these and other key projects. After browsing there, if you have a question about our expertise, or how we can support your project, then please get in touch.
Publications
Our engineers are at the forefront of industry practice. They regularly publish papers to keep industry abreast of their findings and experience. To read some of the publications please follow the relevant links below. If there are other papers written by our engineers that you wish to access, please get in touch.
Grounds for concern
Eugene Gallagher, David Tonks and Ian Nettleton discuss some of their experience with geotechnical issues in recent construction cases. (ICE Proceedings, Forensic Engineering Vol. 170).
Comparative Life Cycle Assessment
Innovative Geotechnical Repair Techniques, Comparative Lifecycle Assessment. TRL Published Project Report PPR889.
Forensic Examination of Critical Special Geotechnical Measures
The effective design, specification and construction of Special Geotechnical Measures (SGMs) is critical to the efficient operation of the National Highways Strategic Road Network (SRN). Given the required performance of the SRN in terms of resilience, reliability, redundancy and recovery it is essential that SGMs are themselves reliable in terms of performance and life; resilient to external conditions such as earthworks deterioration and extraordinary conditions (e.g. climate change).
Innovative Geotechnical Repair Techniques
Work to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative geotechnical repair techniques for slopes has been commissioned by Highways England (HE). The techniques are the planting of live willow poles, Fibre Reinforced Soil (FRS) and Electrokinetic Geosynthetics (EKG).
