Core specialist areas
Geotechnical Engineering
The core of our service is geotechnical assessment and design for transport infrastructure, water, energy facilities and buildings. Our specialists use a range of analytical techniques including numerical modelling to identify specific geotechnical design requirements.
We provide geotechnical design services for foundations; soil and rock slopes; retaining structures; ground improvement; dams and reservoirs; flood defences, marine and near-shore structures; deep basements; temporary works; quarries, landfills, mines, and tailings dams.
We offer value engineering services, providing alternative design solutions for more cost-effective construction.
Engineering Geology
Our engineering geology group specialises in desk studies; terrain analysis; geological and geomorphological mapping; ground investigation and monitoring; rock and soil material and mass characterization; geohazard and risk assessment; design of risk management strategies and remedial works; and design of new excavations and slopes. We utilise these skills and experience for infrastructure, structures, amenity sites and quarries and mines. Our experts are skilled and experienced in collating, managing and presenting 2D and 3D ground models to enable site hazards, constraints and opportunities to be assessed and managed. We carry out emergency inspections, risk assessment and remedial works for a wide range of geohazards, including major landslides globally. The team is experienced in operating in difficult terrain and climatic locations in the UK and globally and is strengthened by our dedicated rope access specialists.
Geoenvironmental Engineering
We combine our geotechnical and geoenvironmental skills to complete contaminated land feasibility studies, ground and groundwater investigations, risk assessment, engineering evaluation, detailed design of remedial works, and construction supervision.
Our geoenvironmental engineering services can be applied to a broad range of scenarios including pre-acquisition assessments, standard site assessment, brownfield redevelopment, remediation assessment, and validation. We advise clients on contaminated land issues and provide expertise in technical, sustainability, and financial aspects of development and operation of modern waste disposal facilities.
Our team has specialised expertise in issues related to landfills and industrial lagoons with complex geotechnics to accommodate hazardous or special wastes.
Expert Witness Services
We have several high-profile engineers that are frequently called upon to provide expert evidence and opinion across our core specialist areas. Our expert services include:
- Technical investigations and reporting
- Forensic engineering
- Advice on claims and contract matters
- Assistance with adjudication
- Expert advice and expert witness services at public enquiries
- Support to insurance claims
Utilising the skills and experience gained on project work our experts provide written part 35 reports as well as providing verbal evidence under cross examination at arbitration and High Court proceedings.
Geoinformatics
At Coffey, we combine the use of analytical software, numerical modelling and hand calculations based on sound engineering principles.
Our team employs advanced software for 3D modelling, allowing us to visualise subsurface conditions accurately. From slope stability analysis to foundation design, these models inform critical decisions.
As a company we are committed to the principles of BIM and produce our engineering output in accordance with our clients’ requirements, including to BIM Level 2 and beyond.
Our designs are subject to a thorough checking process, certified to ISO 9001 to ensure the products delivered to our clients are rigorously controlled.
Coffey provides solutions combining human expertise and cutting-edge software. By embracing technology, we deliver robust, efficient solutions that withstand the test of time.
Hydrogeology
Coffey’s groundwater specialists work on engineering hydrogeology problems related to construction and infrastructure projects. We focus on developing appropriate conceptual hydrogeological models and then applying analytical methods and numerical modelling to develop effective practical solutions.
We specialise in construction dewatering, groundwater control, water supply wells, abstraction licensing and groundwater-related impacts from construction projects. Our project teams are experienced in carrying out pumping tests and other groundwater investigations to provide information for design purposes. We also provide advice to quickly and safely deal with any unexpected groundwater problems that may be encountered during construction.
